The project KomRev aims at developing effective energy demand and supply concepts on the municipal level at the example of the city of Rheine in North-west Germany. These concepts can make an important contribution to limiting implementation risks and economic costs of the sustainable transformation of the energy system. From today’s perspective, the wide variety of energy demand sectors, energy supply technologies and the interconnection between the sectors electricity, heat, gas and mobility results in a wide variety of possible future energy system structures and transformation pathways which are difficult to manage. The goal of a sustainable future energy supply structure should not be limited by the conditions of the supply system today which is fragmented into individual sectors of electricity, heat and mobility. Therefore, a paradigm shift has to overcome the currently existing, but fragmented energy system and help to develop a future energy system which is highly efficient and whose subsystems are interconnected to a high degree.
Within KomRev, two technically and economically feasible concepts of an exergy efficient, interconnected energy system for the target year 2050 are developed. The two different concepts generate a robust range of target conditions which can be further analyzed in detail. On this basis, feasible transformation pathways towards the targeted structure of the energy system can be developed and evaluated. This will help to support resilient investment decision, to identify and to avoid failed long-term transformation strategies and related stranded investments.
