The subjects of mobility and transport affect people today more than ever. On the one hand, an effective transport system is an essential prerequisite for a prospering economy. On the other hand, mobility also allows individuals to actively participate in social life while offering them a high level of personal freedom. This reliance means that individuals participating in the transport system are more easily frustrated with disruptions such as capacity constraints, delay, inadequate information or insufficient safety.

Mobilität verstehen: Prof. Dr. Barbara Lenz

Sie ist die einzige Frau an der Spitze eines der 34 Forschungsinstitute und Einrichtungen des Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR). Sie ist auch die einzige Professorin für Verkehrsgeografie in Deutschland mit einer DLR-Sonderprofessur an der Berliner Humboldt-Universität. Seit dem 1. Januar 2007 leitet Prof. Dr. Barbara Lenz das DLR-Institut für Verkehrsforschung in Berlin Adlershof.

Transport development and environment (VEU)

Mobility of persons and goods satisfies individual human needs. It provides employment and enables the division of labour in a globalized world. However, the permanent increase of mobility demands has also negative consequences. Traffic provides a major contribution to the emission of CO₂ and air pollutants. Furthermore, people are directly or indirectly affected by negative traffic effects like noise.

Elektrisch mobil

Elektromobilität bezeichnet die Nutzung elektrisch betriebener Fahrzeuge im Personen- und Güterverkehr. Ihr Ausbau wird als Chance gesehen, die Abhängigkeit des Verkehrs vom Öl als endliche Energiequelle zu verringern und die bei der Verbrennung des Öls entstehenden CO2-Emissionen zu reduzieren. Nach dem Willen der Bundesregierung sollen bis 2020 eine Million Elektroautos auf deutschen Straßen fahren. Der Nationale Entwicklungsplan Elektromobilität soll die technologischen und wirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen schaffen.

TAPAS – Model for future demand in passenger transport

The TAPAS transport model provides data on the future development of passenger transport demand. Socio-demographic data and information on the time use of people whose mobility behavior is documented form its basis. TAPAS serves to map and evaluate measures and altered framework conditions which influence the demand for passenger transport and its infrastructure. This takes places in the context of a sustainable transport policy, which at the same time ensures a high measure of mobility.
