Whereas in stationary gas turbine combustion chambers it is mainly gaseous fuels such as natural gas that are combusted, in aircraft engines and in fuel gasifiers a key role is played by the combustion of liquid fuels (kerosene). Numerical simulation methods must be highly advanced if they are to simulate spray flames in which fuel droplets are sprayed into a flame, because it is necessary to calculate not only the processes occurring in the gas phase, but also the propagation and vaporisation of fuel sprays. In addition to work in this field, the Institute also conducts research into the physico-chemical properties and combustion simulation of alternative liquid fuels such as ‘biofuels’.
