Research platform for decentralized energy sources



The German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Stuttgart has joined forces with the energy supplier EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG to found a “research platform for decentralized energy sources”. The aim of the research platform is to support the development of new, environmentally friendly power plant concepts. Research activities are focusing on the development and implementation of sustainable, decentralized power plant concepts for the production of electricity and heat. The department for gas turbines from the DLR Institute of Combustion Technology contributes to the platform though its essential research and development of new plant components and concepts, based on conventional and alternative fuels. A further key area is the development of innovative, low-emission and fuel-flexible combustor systems for micro gas turbines. In order to characterize and optimize the components as well as the plant and operating concepts developed there, a micro gas turbine test bench is used with its fuelling infrastructure and extensive test bench measurement techniques. The project partner EnBW is testing the new technologies’ practical application. Pilot and demonstration plants are used to realize, test and optimize the newly-developed concepts. This allows the researchers to define the commercial as well as technical parameters for use by customers later on.
