As part of the DLR HighPerFlex project, the Institute of Aeroelasticity collaborated with ONERA-DADS to conduct a detailed numerical and experimental investigation of the unsteady engine nacelle, pylon and wings interference effects. The images on the right show the WIONA model (Wing with Oscillating Nacelle) designed for this purpose. The WIONA model consists of a nacelle overlapping horizontally with the wing that is excitable relative to the wing by vibrations of variable frequency in the two degrees of freedom roll and yaw.
In addition to the motion-induced dynamic forces, possible flow instabilities caused by pronounced shock-boundary layer interaction in the interference region were analysed.
