Flutter is a dynamic instability of an elastic body in a flow. It is a limiting factor for an aircraft’s flight envelope at high Mach numbers. Boundary layer transition refers to the transition of a flow from a laminar (ordered) state to a turbulent (disordered) state. Laminar flows show a lower friction drag, which is why long laminar boundary layers are sought for the flow around bodies. The effect of boundary layer transition on airfoil flutter is up to now not well understood.
