Combustor Simulation

The department performs numerical investigations of combustion systems for aeronautics and energy sector.
The primary focus of our activities is the development of accurate, robust and efficient numerical tools for the integrated design of turbomachinery components.
The major tasks of the department are:

  • Extension of the CFD tool TRACE (Turbomachinery Research Aerodynamic Computational Environment) for reacting flows inside  combustion chambers
  • Thermochemistry tabulation  for compressible density-based CFD tools
  • RANS and LES simulations of turbulent reacting flows in gas turbine combustors
  • Investigation of  the interactions between engine components, e.g. Combustor-Turbine interaction (CTI)
  • Development of scaling methodology for lean gas turbine combustion chambers
  • Applications of commercial and industrial CFD tools to support experimental tests

Instantaneous temperature distribution of a LES calculation using the FGM combustion model in the High Pressure Optical Triple Sector (HOTS)
