Although numerical simulations are rapidly becoming more important for the development process of next generation of combustor technology, validation testing remains essential to this same development process. The Department of Combustor Testing, as part of the Institute of Propulsion Technology, executes large scale experiments (Technikum) to solve technological challenges of gas turbine engineering. Developers of next generation gas turbine technology are bound by social demands and goals for the protection of the environment. This requires a simultaneous focus on increased efficiency and reduced emissions of the gas turbine. DLR, as a research organization, supports this development process for the introduction of advanced combustor technology by operating large scale test beds for the experimental development. The modern research platforms of the Institute (HBK1-5) provide internal and external scientists with the opportunity of validating components and technology at realistic full load conditions concerning pressure and exhaust temperature. Modular technical facilities allow for a broad operational envelope concerning pressure, temperature and mass flow, creating the possibility for the combustion engineer to vary these parameters independently from the gas turbine machine characteristics. The platforms can be flexibly used for basic and application research. The infrastructure will accommodate project specific modifications and technological upgrades. The synergetic effects of the infrastructure, which meets the requirements of the European research programs (Flightpath 2050) and national power generation and aero development programs, can only be described as globally unrivalled. We commit to producing validation results at a high standard of reproducibility up to 40 bars of combustor pressure. We pursue the Institutes’ objective to accelerate the development process and facilitate the earliest possible introduction of next generation combustor technology into the respective markets and contribute to the wellbeing of the society. Highly motivated and experienced personnel with a broad spectrum of skills and competences guarantee a reduction of validation and development time lines. The equipment and infrastructure of the research platforms has been developed and upgraded in collaboration with the partners of the Institute in order to meet their requirements for gaining insights for the combustor development with exit temperatures up to 2200K while sustaining the high level of availability. To support the DLR strategy “Future Fuels”, the research platforms equipped for the deployment of liquid and gaseous fuels of any composition in aero and power generation applications. The research platforms have been furnished with a flexible operational permit which allows for a fast execution of next generation experiments. DLR’s own research, joint research projects and cooperation with the partners of the Institute are carried out in order to gain scientific results for tomorrow’s gas turbine technology. The Institute of Propulsion Technology considers itself, in accordance with the Innovation strategy of the DLR, as a provider of technology, driver of innovation and strategic partner of Industry and science.
