The test facility Single Sector Combustor (SSC) was built to investigate burners and combustor elements of aeronautical combustors. The investigations are focused on the reacting two-phase-flow-field using advanced laser optical measurement techniques. Particularly the investigation of the following aspects of the combustion process under realistic conditions is of interest: flow field, reaction zones, temperatures, combustion instabilities, soot building mechanisms. The SSC is a unique test facility for the investigation of new burners and combustor elements, but also for the development and testing of highly sophisticated optical measurement techniques. It is possible to operate the SSC at typical aeronautical conditions (temperatures and pressures) with high fuel flexibility: liquid or vaporised kerosene, alternative fuels, natural gas. The rectangular combustion chamber of the SSC has a full optical access to the primary zone from three sides. Additionally the liner wall of the fourth side can be adapted for laser optical investigations. Due to the experience of many years in design, fabrication and operation of additively manufactured high temperature components, nearly the whole combustor is built by Selective Laser Melting (SLM). In terms of the development and testing of innovative measurement techniques the test facility represents an essential link between atmospheric laboratory scale testing and demonstrators like HBK1 with full scale burners. Due to the possibility to traverse the combustor in all three spatial directions by a traversing unit, the measurement setup can be installed on fixed positions. Hence setting up measurement systems is greatly simplified, which is a major advantage especially for the development and testing of new and/or combinatorial measurement techniques.
