Dr. Thomas Esch

Thomas Esch has led the Smart Cities and Spatial Development team at the DLR Earth Observation Center (EOC) since October 2008. The research group looks at the use of Earth observation techniques to support sustainable urban development.

As a geographer, Esch is enthusiastic about the opportunities afforded by viewing Earth from space, looking at the world in context to acquire a better understanding of the challenges presented by global change. Digital information, particularly relating to location, is one of the most valuable resources in this area. Esch and his team are therefore collecting, consolidating and structuring different data streams in order to use intelligent analysis techniques in a targeted way to derive information that is relevant to specific issues and user groups. This turns data into added value for society.
