Ulrich Wagner

Ulrich Wagner has been the DLR Executive Board Member for Energy and Transport Research from 1 March 2010 to 1 March 2015.

Ulrich Wagner was born in Passau in 1955. A son of diplomats, he attended schools in Bonn, Moscow, Antwerp, Brussels and Bogotá, where he received his Abitur (high school leaving certificate) before studying electrical engineering in Bogotá from 1976 to 1981, as well as at the Technical University of Munich (Technische Universität München; TUM).

In his doctoral thesis at TUM, Ulrich Wagner addressed the topic of 'Energy yield from traction batteries' in electrically powered cars. From 1987 to 1995 he was Managing Director of the Energy Research Institute (Forschungsstelle für Energiewirtschaft; FfE), while also (1988 to 1995) a member of the academic staff at TUM working in the fields of 'Load optimisation and energy storage' as well as 'Electrically powered road transport'. In 1995, Ulrich Wagner received the 'Ehrenring' award from the Association of German Engineers (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure; VDI) for outstanding services.

Since 1995, Ulrich Wagner has been the Scientific Director of the FfE. In that same year, he was appointed Professor (Ordinarius) of Energy Economics and Applications Engineering at TUM. From 2004 to 2010 Ulrich Wagner was a member of the Senate of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres. From 1996 to 2003, Ulrich Wagner was Chairman of VDI's regional association in Southern Bavaria.
