Digitalisation in the economy

Germany’s strength lies in the development of highly-complex, automated and secure systems that require a high degree of engineering expertise and technological insight.

In Germany, the digitalisation of the economy and society offers great potential for innovation and increased productivity, and thus for growth and prosperity. Germany’s strength lies in the development of highly-complex, automated and secure systems that require a high degree of engineering expertise and technological insight.

Through its cross-sectoral area of digitalisation in industry, DLR is helping to address the following challenges:

  • Internet communication and broadband provision via satellites or high-altitude platforms, combined with laser-based optical data transmission, has the potential for creating cost-effective, secure internet access. Among other things, innovative logistics and mobility solutions for industry can be developed.
  • High-altitude unmanned platforms are attracting increasing interest due to their flexibility and autonomy. The possibility of permanent placement in one location means that one potential future area of application is the emergence of a new, data-driven service sector.
  • Industry 4.0 addresses networked industrial production and the development of more reliable, sensitive and intelligent systems for human-machine cooperation.
  • Rapid regulatory approval is a key factor for industrial competitiveness. The consistent introduction of numerical simulation into the approval process can significantly reduce time and cost risks.
