TESIS: The power of salt

On 15 September 2017, the TESIS facility was inaugurated at the DLR site in Cologne. At this new facility, it will be possible to test components for molten salt storage. In the DLRmagazine, project manager Thomas Bauer tells us all about it.

Without solar and wind power there would be no Energiewende (energy transition). And no energy transition without energy storage. Energy storage materials store the energy and release it when it is needed. Salt could play an important role here. The new and worldwide unique test facility TESIS of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) will research this. The September issue of the DLR Magazine features an interview with the man who makes salts flow and his team, who are exploring new horizons in terms of molten salt storage. We are also entering new territories when we talk about automated driving in the future. Intelligent cars will change driving as a whole and the urban scene in particular. DLR researchers are investigating how at the test facility in Lower Saxony, among others.

In another test setting, this time with slightly less traffic, space and deep-sea researchers worked together: on Mount Etna, they tested robotic systems for the autonomous exploration of the Moon and other planetary bodies. Our report in the magazine takes you on a very special 'lunar odyssey' on the volcano. A volcano that can be seen from space with Earth observation satellites, such as the future Tandem-L mission, which, if given green light, will tell us more about our dynamic Earth.
