The infrared observatory will examine, among other things, the Magellanic Clouds
In addition to targets in the Milky Way, the researchers want to investigate the Small and the Large Magellanic Clouds during flights by the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) in the southern hemisphere. This image shows a composite of observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud made by ESA’s Herschel space telescope and NASA’s Spitzer infrared observatory. Clearly, dark gas and dust clouds are emerging in the Milky Way’s neighbouring dwarf galaxy.
