The Vatnajökull Glacier in Iceland is the largest glacier in Europe, covering an area of approximately 8400 square kilometres. Due to global warming, continental ice masses are melting, causing sea levels to rise. As a result of this and other effects, sea level is currently rising worldwide by an average of just over three millimetres per year.
