FHS: Assistance system supports pilots during joint helicopter flights

The as­sis­tance sys­tem fa­cil­i­tates the for­ma­tion flight of manned and un­manned air­craft: In 2018, sev­er­al for­ma­tion flight al­go­rithms were de­vel­oped and test­ed in flight tests. The goal was to de­vel­op for­ma­tion flight al­go­rithms that re­duce the work­load of the he­li­copter crew. The drone re­acts au­to­mat­i­cal­ly to the move­ments of the manned he­li­copter.

Air Vehicle Simulator AVES

The flight sim­u­la­tor cen­ter AVES (Air Ve­hi­cle Sim­u­la­tor) has two high-fi­deli­ty sim­u­la­tors, one air­craft and one he­li­copter, for cut­ting edge flight re­search. AVES is de­signed as a mod­u­lar, flex­i­ble plat­form us­ing the lat­est tech­nolo­gies for a com­pre­hen­sive ex­plo­ration of flight.

For the val­i­da­tion of mod­ern nu­mer­i­cal anal­y­sis meth­ods for the aero­dy­nam­ics and aeroa­cous­tics of he­li­copters, it is nec­es­sary to con­duct wind tun­nel tests with he­li­copter mod­els. The re­sults ob­tained from these tests con­tribute sig­nif­i­cant­ly to the low­er­ing of de­vel­op­ment risks and to the re­duc­tion of the de­vel­op­ment time and costs for new he­li­copter sys­tems.

For the last 60 years, the Institute of Flight Systems has been researching, modelling and developing interdisciplinary solutions and applications with the aim of making flying safer and more efficient. The Institute's research focuses on the areas of flight mechanics, flight characteristics as well as measurement and system technology of flight and other safety-critical systems. The application-oriented research concentrates on the holistic consideration of the aircraft and its systems with regard to flight dynamics, flight performance and flight characteristics.
