For the last 60 years, the Institute of Flight Systems has been researching, modelling and developing interdisciplinary solutions and applications with the aim of making flying safer and more efficient. The Institute's research focuses on the areas of flight mechanics, flight characteristics as well as measurement and system technology of flight and other safety-critical systems. The application-oriented research concentrates on the holistic consideration of the aircraft and its systems with regard to flight dynamics, flight performance and flight characteristics.

Flying Helicopter Simulator (FHS) and superARTIS on the apronThe assistance system facilitates the formation flight of manned and unmanned aircraft: In 2018, several formation flight algorithms were developed and tested in flight tests. The goal was to develop formation flight algorithms that reduce the workload of the helicopter crew. The drone reacts automatically to the movements of the manned helicopter.
Air Vehicle Simulator AVESThe flight simulator center AVES (Air Vehicle Simulator) has two high-fidelity simulators, one aircraft and one helicopter, for cutting edge flight research. AVES is designed as a modular, flexible platform using the latest technologies for a comprehensive exploration of flight.
Rotor test standFor the validation of modern numerical analysis methods for the aerodynamics and aeroacoustics of helicopters, it is necessary to conduct wind tunnel tests with helicopter models. The results obtained from these tests contribute significantly to the lowering of development risks and to the reduction of the development time and costs for new helicopter systems.
