One of the guiding concepts of DLR aeronautics research is the 'Virtual Product', a highly accurate mathematical-numerical representation of an aerial veicle with all its characteristics over the entire life cycle. This requires multidisciplinary simulation methods and process chains/platforms geared to the efficient use of future high-performance computers. The development of software methods as well as the management and analysis of very large amounts of data also pose challenges.
The Institute is involved in the development of programming and data models for the use of current and future parallel computer architectures, provides platforms for multidisciplinary product analysis and optimisation, and develops dedicated software methods and technologies for the realisation of the virtual product (data analytics, replacement models, integration platforms, software security, virtual certification). The institute was founded in 2017.
