Research wind farm equipped with comprehensive measurement technology

Me­te­o­ro­log­i­cal mea­sure­ments al­low pre­cise wind fore­casts to be made in or­der to op­er­ate the wind tur­bines in the op­ti­mum range. Such mea­sure­ments make it pos­si­ble to in­crease the out­put of wind farms with­out in­creas­ing their size.

Smart Blades – intelligent rotor blades to increase wind farm output

The de­vel­op­ment of smart ro­tor blades is ex­pect­ed to sig­nif­i­cant­ly re­duce the loads act­ing on the blades. This will fa­cil­i­tate aero­dy­nam­i­cal­ly op­ti­mised, more lightweight tur­bine de­signs, re­duc­ing the amount of ma­te­ri­al re­quired for con­struc­tion.

The Braunschweig Wind Energy Experiments (WX) facility is a young, growing organisational unit founded as part of the continuation of wind energy research by the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

Following the necessary planning and building work, the facility will operate a research wind farm equipped with unique research infrastructure in Krummendeich (Stade district). In addition, WX supports and coordinates the research of the institutes working in this field. This involves close cooperation with the Institute of Aeroelasticity, the Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology, the Institute of Composite Structures and Adaptive Systems, the Institute of Flight Systems and the Institute of Atmospheric Physics. The WX facility will also partner with and support the research projects of external research bodies and industry.
