High-speed Centrifugal Compressor Test Rig (SRV)

Experimental investigations on newly developed compressors and diffusers for the validation of new design concepts and numerical flow simulations are conducted on the Centrifugal Compressor Test Rig at the Institute of Propulsion Technology in Cologne.

With 1.5 megawatts of drive power and a high-speed planetary gear system that has a transmission ratio of 1:30, this large-scale facility at the German Aerospace Center offers the possibility of testing centrifugal compressors at speeds of up to 60,000 revolutions per minute.

Acquiring more knowledge about aerodynamic noise generation mechanisms

In addition to conventional measurement technologies, optical techniques (points and surfaces) are increasingly being used. Time-resolving sensors and measurement systems, which are often adapted specifically to the extreme conditions (pressure, temperature), are being used to an ever greater extent as well.

These measurement techniques – some of them newly developed – can be tested under extreme environmental conditions on this system. At the same time, the extensive measurement data acquired in this context are used for the validation of numerical methods and to optimise design software. Acoustic measurements are performed to obtain detailed knowledge and information about aerodynamic noise generation mechanisms, as well as the noise properties of centrifugal compressors.
