Prof. Achim von Keudell, Chair Experimental Physics II, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Plasma methods as tool for sustainable species conversion
Abtract:
The transition from fossil fuels to renewable energies requires innovative technologies in many areas, from manufacturing to the chemical industry. Chemical processes, which rely on fossil fuels as heat sources, especially need to be electrified. Using plasmas for chemical conversion is straightforward when using electricity from renewables as the primary energy source. This presentation discusses the potential and challenges of plasma-based species conversion to couple plasma chemistry with catalysis. In addition, thermal plasma methods are presented as a tool for methane pyrolysis and iron reduction to provide alternative methods for hydrogen production or green steel, respectively.
