Especially in south-east Asia the rapid urbanization causes more and more traffic problems which end in air pollution, noise and generally bad living conditions. DLR-TS is working over 10 years in the field of sustainable transport for (upcoming) Megacities and urban areas generally. Outgoing from China in 2002, several joint projects and EC-projects were conducted and led to an good network with reliable project participants in economy and politics.

Optimization of Urban Traffic Management towards Environment - Friendly and Safe Mobility

In the recent past, environmental problems in emerging markets, especially in China, have increased dramatically. Compared to the slightly decreasing air pollution caused by the industry, traffic-related air pollution has increased significantly. High traffic congestion in urban areas raises the level of pollution which in turn results in a disturbance of daily life of inhabitants in large cities. Especially in big cities, like Beijing, the air pollution level is above the critical health threshold. Beside the environmental issues traffic safety aspects need also to be focused. Compared to European Cities the level of traffic safety in China like in other emerging countries is much lower. Reasons for that are for instance the high amounts of motor bicycles and scooters as well as the fact that traffic rules are often not observed. This leads to chaotic traffic situations in many intersections. Now, countries like China are asked to solve these problems and improve the current precarious situation.

Together with the Chinese partners the project OptimUM addresses this issues and helps to create an environmentally friendly and safe mobility. The partners analyze and develop solutions to reduce the air pollution and increase traffic safety at intersections. The approaches are implemented and evaluated at real intersections in the ITS test area in Hefei, China. The findings of the research project will help to reduce the high level of traffic-related air pollution in China, later worldwide, by applying an efficient traffic and transport management system. Further it will provide a contribution for safer road mobility.

Goal:

  • General analysis of the traffic-related influence on air pollution and traffic safety

Project content:

  • Combination of traffic measurements and environmental measurements to identify traffic-related air pollution

    • Establishment of a cost-effective prototype model for simulating traffic-related emissions at the urban area in China

    • Establishment of the environmental toolset consisting of a traffic emission model and the street immission model

    • Evaluation of the effects of traffic-related pollution on air quality at the urban area in China

  • Identification of the causal relationship between driving behaviors and traffic safety at intersections

    • Identification of accident-prone situations at intersections by integration of the intersection monitoring system and the traffic simulation

    • Traffic safety analysis with use of traffic simulation

  • Development of traffic management strategies and concepts with regard to the reduction of environmental impacts and increase of traffic safety

    • Investigation on the potential benefits of the optimized traffic management in terms of traffic safety and traffic-related air pollution.

  • Field tests and comparisons at selected crossroads in Germany and China

2015-04-21 Kick-off Workshop for the Project in Hefei /China

The project Kick-off Meeting took place on April 21th 2015 in Hefei within the framework of“2015 Hefei International Forum Towards Smart & Responsible City Traffic Management”. About 20 members of all partners of both countries attended the first official Kick-off meeting, among them as guests representations of the "Department of Science and Technology Anhui province China (Anhui Most)", The following days more meetings on topics of the different working areas took place. The results of the workshop were collecting information, arranged working contents, and project-timetable, which are confirmed by all partners.

2017-10-25 The International Forum on Transport and Environment in Chengdu /China

From October 25. to 27. 2017, “the International Forum on Transport and Environment” was held in Chengdu, China as a special event of “The 12th EU—China Business and Technology Cooperation Fair”. The international forum was jointly organized by the Institute of Transportation Systems of German Aerospace Center (DLR-TS), Anhui Institute of Optics and Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (AIOFM-CAS) and the EU Project Innovation Center. More than 100 Chinese and foreign experts and scholars, government departments and enterprises and institutions attended the forum. The forum aims to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in the fields of transportation management and environmental protection so as to jointly promote the improvement of urban transport with environmentally friendly and efficient Mobility. During the forum, researchers from China and EU conducted academic exchanges and discussions mainly on the topics: reduction of traffic-related emissions such as pollutants and noise; increasing the attractiveness of energy-efficient mobility and logistics solutions; environment oriented city development.

joint CoRe
 

The project 'joint CoRe' will establish a joint, sustainable center of research hosted by the Tonji University Shanghai / College of Transportation Engineering and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) / Institute of Transportation Systems .

The expansion of cooperation between the partners serves sustainable research with a focus on mobility and transport and their link to the environment and traffic safety. It enables joint, excellent and international research and education of young scientists from both countries and establishes the results in applied technology in Shanghai, China and Germany.

The research center combines the processes with the individual elements, each of them contributes to the development of the "joint CoRe". Based on the common basics (data, information, processes from both countries) the interlocking enables

  • the research of methods and algorithms,
  • the scientific analysis,
  • the simulation of solution approaches,
  • the data collection and application in the real world

and serves the international comparison. The center of research will provide the organizational framework, technical infrastructures and research- and work programs for long-term top-level research.

2017-10-23 Our Kick-Off

The DLR and the College of Transportation Engineering, Tongji University, celebrated the grand opening of the “DLR- Tongji Joint Center of Research for Mobility, Traffic-Safety and Environment" in Shanghai. Prof. Wu Jiang (Vize Präsident of the Tongji University) und Mr. Marc Hohloch (temporary Head of the Institute of Transportation Systems) signed the agreement for cooperation together with 20 experts of the two organisations. With this agreement they continue the successful collaboration between Germany and China in the field of sustainable traffic and mobility. The partners will work closely together to build a laboratory for environment and traffic safety and focus on the support of young scientists. The DLR is financially supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Tongji University is supported by the „111 Project on Transportation Safety Discipline“ of the Ministry of Education in China.

2018-11 Setup of the
Environment-Measurement-Box in Shanghai

During our last work-meeting at Tongji University we set up the Environment measurement Box developed by DLR-TS. This Box will measure traffic induced air pollution at the intersection, where we establish our intersection monitoring system in the next months.

2019-01-13 DGPS measurements at the first intersection

On the next step to the DLR-TS Intersection Monitoring System, our Tongji Partners together with the Tongji Institute of Surveying made DGPS measurements at the intersection in Jiading near to the Tongji Campus.

What's next?

20.-21.02.2019 – SUMO Basic Training Course
Simulation of Urban MObility (SUMO) is an open source, highly portable, microscopic road traffic simulation package designed to handle large road networks. SUMO has been extensively applied in different projects related to network performance, traffic assignment, vehicle routing, traffic impact analysis, traffic emission, V2X and other diverse traffic issues since more than 15 years. In addition to conventional vehicles electric vehicles can also be considered and analyzed in SUMO. Different parking activities, such as searching for parking lots, driving to the pre-assigned parking space, can be simulated with SUMO. Moreover, SUMO can simulate pedestrians, bicycles and their interactions with vehicles in order to present various traffic-related activities in cities.
This training course focuses on the basic application for setting up and revising a traffic simulation scenario and the respective simulation execution and visualization.

In the major cities of China, millions of new vehicles are causing increasing traffic congestion, air pollution and a shortage of parking space. Similar challenges have also been faced by other large cities. In recent years DLR has carried out various research projects in Europe and China, which have produced the "German Innovation Package - Traffic and Environment Monitoring System (TEMsys)". "20 years of Science & Technology Cooperation between Vietnam and Germany"

Together with other Smart City networks GIP2China presented the traffic and environment monitoring system with respect to the Vietnamese city structure and traffic demand.

2017-03-20 First trip to China

In the major cities of China millions of new vehicles are now causing increasing traffic congestion, air pollution and a shortage of parking space. They are therefore very interested in the DLR-project GIP2China with his scientific and technical consulting in research, development and implementation of system solutions, their extensions and costumer-oriented adaptations in the field of traffic management as well as environmental and future-oriented mobility solutions.

The first trip to China led the GIP2China- team to Beijing, Chengdu and the two smaller citys MianYang in the Sechuan Province and XuanCheng in the Anhui Province.

Beijing:

At a meeting with the KfW in Beijing the further procedure in the project ITS Construction for Huainan and the potentials for further projects were discussed. In addition the German embassy was visited and the project idea presented to the new transport councilor, Mrs. Petra Weindorf, and her Team.

Chengdu:

The second stop of the trip was Chengdu (Sechuan Province). A first meeting with project participant EUPIC took place. In addition a workshop with the municipal authorities of Chengdu was held. The city has expressed great interest in GIP2China and will work with the GIP2China team to take further steps towards project management. A specialist workshop with all German project participants in Chengdu will be held in October (date?).

The fastest developing region of Chengdu is the TianFu New City with a surface area of 1578km². At a meeting with the administrative bodies of the City the great potentials of cooperation between GIP2China and the fast-growing district were identified. GIP2China plans further involvement in the city during the project period. During his stay in Chengdu, the project team was also presented at the German Consulate in Chengdu. Ingrid Delfs, the Deputy Consul General, has welcomed the activities in Chengdu and promised her further support.

MianYang and XuanCheng:

In 2016 the city of MianYang has built up a modern parking management system, which has impressed the project team with its comprehensive data and management center. There is great interest in the further use of BigData by MianYang.
In XuanCheng, the project team was welcomed by the Deputy Mayor Yangchang TIAN, and the KfW-Model-Huainan was presented to the responsible authorities (Transport Police, Transportation Committee and Finance Department) during a meeting and analyzed the applicability to XuanCheng. Following the team's return to Germany, the city has already asked for further steps on the concrete approach that the GIP2China team is working on with local project participant AnhuiKeli.

2017-05-03 GIP2China at the "Smart Cities in New York City ’17"

Together with other German research networks in the BMBF’s international "Shaping the Future – Building the City of Tomorrow" campaign the GIP2China-team promoted themself at the "Smart Cities NYC ‘17" trade fair in New York to find international project participants for joint urban development Projects.

Under the lead of Mr. Pinhua YANG a delegation of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of the Sichuan province visited DLR in Berlin.

At the opening ceremony of the forum Alexander Malcolm Fowles, Deputy Consul General of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Chengdu, Pinhua Yang, Deputy director of Science & Technology Department of Sichuan Province, Marc Hohloch, Director of the Institute of Transportation Systems of the DLR, Dr. Pinhua Xie, Deputy Director of CAS- AIOFM, and Dr. Hong He, Beijing Representative Office of the German Helmholtz Association, addressed respectively the Open speech and emphasized that they should look forward to more win-win cooperation between China and Germany in the face of the key problems such as urban traffic pollution and jointly create a sustainable new concept of the urban mobility.

Academician and Professor Wenqing Liu, chief scientist of CAS- AIOFM, gave a keynote speech entitled "Application of Advanced Monitoring Technology in Motor Vehicle Emission Control and Supervision". The report mainly introduced the main pollutants of urban traffic emissions, on-site monitoring / telemetry tools for vehicle emissions, and all-dimensional monitoring instruments.

During the forum researchers from China and EU conducted academic exchanges and discussions mainly on the topics: reduction of traffic-related emissions such as pollutants and noise, increasing the attractiveness of energy-efficient mobility and logistics Solutions, environment oriented city development.

This forum is funded by the BMBF Project “GIP2China - German Innovation Package Traffic and Environment-Monitoring-System (TEMsys) goes to China” and the Helmholtz-CAS Joint Research Group Project “OptimUM -Optimization of Urban Traffic Management towards Environment - Friendly and Safe Mobility”.

2017-11-13 Smart Cities Expo in Barcelona

GIP2China was part of the “Research in Germany – Land of Ideas” delegation travelling to the “Smart City Expo World Congress” between 13th and 16th November.

2018-05 International Forum for Traffic Safety in Shanghai

Together with the Tongji University GIP2China and other Projects of the Building the City of Tomorrow Campaign conducted a conference on smart cities in Shanghai. This was the final event of the campaign.
