Visit from Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM)

On March 12, five researchers from the Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM) visited our institute in Zittau for a workshop on the development of high-temperature heat pumps. During the workshop, they not only discussed the latest developments of the two institutes, but also visited the construction site of a multi-stage water vapor high-temperature heat pump in Zittau.

Prof. Dr. Uwe Riedel awarded the Russell Severance Springer Professorship

Uwe Riedel, Director of the DLR-Institute of Low Carbon Industrial Processes and Chair of the Department of Decarbonized Industrial Processes at BTU Cottbus - Senftenberg, has been awarded the "Russell Severance Springer Professorship" of the University of California, Berkeley for 2023/24.

Launch of the EU project "EPHYRA" for the construction and operation of an innovative renewable hydrogen production facility

The official kick-off meeting of the project "EPHYRA", regarding the construction and operation of an innovative renewable hydrogen production facility, that takes place on 21 and 22 September 2023 in Athens and Corinth. Funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, the project will be coordinated by Motor Oil, with the participation of 9 partners from 7 countries (Italy, France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Greece). The project’s duration will be 5 years.

On September 25 and 26, 2023, Prof. Jeff M. Bergthorson visited us at the Cottbus site. Mr. Bergthorson works as a professor at McGill University in Montréal, Canada and is a pioneer in research on metals as an energy source.

Milestone for the ZiRa pilot plant

In the new test rig "Vorpilot ZiRa" (Zittauer Rankine Prozess) at the Zittau site of the Institute of Low-Carbon Industrial Processes, the map measurement of a turboradial compressor stage with the medium water vapor was successfully carried out.

The conference gathers global experts in a wide range of technical fields and thus provides a unique platform to actively address the challenges in the field of propulsion and energy. It is organized by IGTI, i.e. the International Gas Turbine Institute.

Climate Commission Cottbus

Climate protection is becoming increasingly important and presents us with challenges that we can only overcome as a cross-sectional task together in all layers of society, science, politics as well as business. The city of Cottbus/Chóśebuz is committed to climate protection and the defined climate protection goals and intends to establish a Climate Commission, which will not only accompany the preparation of the climate protection concept, but also advise the bodies and the administration of the city of Cottbus/Chóśebuz in matters of climate protection and in the implementation of climate protection goals. In doing so, the Climate Commission shall promote the exchange between the public, politics, administration, economy and science.

DLR signs the foundation of the non-profit association Hi!Lusatia e.V. in Görlitz

On 08 June 2023, the members of the Lausitz Science Network e.V. (LSN) signed the foundation of the non-profit association Hi!Lusatia e.V. based in Görlitz. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is one of the founding members of the association with its Institute of Low-Carbon Industrial Processes. The alliance was initiated by CASUS (Center for Advanced Systems Understanding at HZDR) and the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) back in October 2020, with the aim of working together with the region's research institutions and business partners to further develop the strengths of the science and business region and increase its visibility.

Lusatian Conference 2022: Staying the Course for Decarbonization in the Energy Crisis

Staying the course toward decarbonization despite the energy crisis was probably the most important message of the symposium. "By switching to green energy sources, we create a win-win situation: we avoid carbon dioxide and at the same time we are less dependent on fossil energy imports," emphasized Michael Kellner, Parliamentary State Secretary at the BMWK, in his video message. In addition, experts from science and practice showed transformation paths and explained the necessary levers for a successful industrial transformation.
