Innovative wings for more fuel-efficient aircraft

Future aircraft need to be lighter and hence more fuel-efficient. For this reason, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) in Göttingen has now tested two wing designs as part of an EU project. These types of wings have hitherto been impossible to manufacture.

The aircraft manufacturer Embraer, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR), the Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) and German–Dutch Wind Tunnels (DNW) have succeeded in testing an innovative method for examining the safety of future aircraft. In another first, they have been able to analyse the flutter behaviour of a wing in real time.

Wind power – innovative vibration tests on rotor blades

An electrodynamic vibration exciter pulls and pushes at the 20-metre SmartBlades DemoBlade with a force of 100 kilograms. The rotor blade oscillates with a deflection of 50 centimetres at the tip. Researchers from the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) are conducting precise analyses of these movements and the material stresses on the rotor blade.

DLR and the Japanese Railway Technical Research Institute sign cooperation agreement

The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and the Japanese Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI) signed an agreement for closer cooperation on 1 March 2018 in Tokyo. The two organisations are therefore strengthening their existing collaboration in aerodynamic research. The RTRI is one of the world's most renowned railway and rail transport research institutions.

The cradle of aeronautical research celebrates its 110 anniversary

The first German state institute for aeronautics research was founded 110 years ago in Göttingen. It was the precursor of the present-day German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR), and laid the foundations for modern aeronautics.

NGT CARGO: What freight trains of the future will look like
