The DLR site in Augsburg conducts research in various disciplines across various institutes and sites. The facility was opened in May 2011, has approximately 50 employees and is located in the research triangle formed by the University of Augsburg, Technology Centre Augsburg and Augsburg Innovations Park.
A perfectly manufactured pressure bulkhead is essential for safe flight. This component forms an airtight barrier between the passenger cabin – and the rest of the pressurised fuselage – and the tail section. Only with this bulkhead can the correct air pressure be maintained in the aircraft. The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has demonstrated an innovative technology that enables the welding of pressure bulkheads made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP).
The Senate of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) approved the establishment of seven DLR institutes in its meeting on 28 June 2017. DLR was tasked with building new institutes by a resolution of the Budgetary Committee of the Deutscher Bundestag in November 2016.
Since September 2016, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and Canadian University of British Columbia (UBC) have been successfully collaborating as part of the DLR@UBC initiative. This partnership is set to strengthen over the next few months. The Chair of the DLR Executive Board Pascale Ehrenfreund and President of UBC Santa Ono agreed on this during a meeting in Vancouver on 31 March 2017.
