Lowell Crater - a bullseye on Mars

The 200-kilometre-wide peak-ring impact crater shown in this High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) image mosaic is named after the US astronomer Percival Lowell (1855 - 1916). HRSC is a camera system on board ESA’s Mars Express spacecraft, which has been orbiting Mars since 2003. Mars Express has flown over and imaged Lowell Crater several times in recent months. The systematic processing of the data acquired by the camera system was performed at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) Institute of Planetary Research in Berlin-Adlershof. Experts specialising in planetology and remote sensing at the Freie Universität Berlin produced the images shown here using these data.

Fifteen years ago, early on the evening of Saturday 10 January 2004, over a dozen scientists crammed into a tiny, somewhat austere room at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) research centre in Berlin Adlershof to stare intently at two monitors. They were awaiting the first images from 'their' experiment, the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC).

The crater was named after the renowned Russian rocket engineer and spacecraft designer Sergei Pavlovich Korolev.

These images acquired by the DLR-operated High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board the ESA Mars Express spacecraft show Greeley Crater on Mars. It was named after the US scientist Ronald Greeley, who passed away in 2011. In addition to being a pioneer in the field of planetary geology, he was a member of the HRSC experiment team from the very outset, and was also Co-investigator of the HRSC.

Magma bubbles rise up from the planet's interior, making room as they ascend and pour their molten rock over the planet's surface in the form of lava. The emptied magma chambers create cavities, which can cause the rigid masses of rock of the crust to sag and shift.

There are two hypotheses regarding the formation of this geological structure – it is either an impact crater or the caldera of a Martian supervolcano.

New Mars Express images of the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos

Mars Express is currently the only satellite exploring Mars from an elliptical orbit. This allows regular, close flybys of Phobos, the larger of the two Martian moons. In summer 2017, the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) observed the moon from a distance of approximately 115 kilometres.

The latest images acquired by the HRSC camera show the Neukum impact crater. This crater was named after the German physicist and planetary scientist Gerhard Neukum, who passed away in 2014. Neukum was the person behind the HRSC.

This unusual image, acquired by the Mars High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC), shows a view of the northern hemisphere of Mars from the Martian north polar ice cap, situated at the bottom, up to the Martian equator at the horizon. It was taken for calibration of the camera in June this year.

Over billions of years, meteorite impacts have altered the surface of Mars. Current images from the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) operated by the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) on board the ESA Mars Express spacecraft show an impact crater over 30 kilometres in size with a prominent ejecta blanket. It is located to the north of the largest impact basin on Mars, Hellas Planitia, where some scientists believe there was once a large lake.
