The research facility in Stade was established in 2009 as one of the two research sites operated by the Center for Lightweight Production Technology (Zentrum für Leichtbauproduktionstechnologie; ZLP) and has been an independent site of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) since 2011.

Lightweight and therefore kerosene-saving wings made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) are already being used in the quiet, fuel-efficient flagship Airbus A350. But production has been extremely expensive and time-consuming thus far, because only one robotic laying unit stacks carbon fibres layer by layer, until a wing shell is formed.
Researchers at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) have completed the first innovative rotor blade as part of the SmartBlades2 project. The rotor blade with a length of 20 metres can passively adapt to varying wind conditions using bending torsion coupling.
