"Cutting-edge research requires excellent minds – particularly more females – at all levels. Launch your mission with us and send in your application now!" Prof. Pascale Ehrenfreund - Chair of the DLR Executive Board

Your mission:

For the new DLR Institute for Data Science in Jena, Germany, a new research group on Data Management Technologies is established. The main research focus of the research group is on the development of innovative methods for the efficient management of large volumes of multi-dimensional, heterogeneous data in distributed IT infrastructures. The research group works in close collaboration with the Friedrich-Schiller University Jena and the Ilmenau University of  Technology.

For the initial phase, three focus areas have been defined: (1) Storage Management of large, multi-dimensional data volumes, (2) Index Structures for annotated, multi-dimensional data, and (3) knowledge modeling and semantic networks of heterogeneous data and applications.

Your task is to work closely with your colleagues in an international team on one of the three topics to develop the foundations of tomorrow’s data management systems.

The position will consider the following research tasks:

  • detailed analysis of fundamental requirements for managing large volumes of heterogeneous data
  • detailed analysis of state-of-the-art IT infrastructures for the development of novel methods for data management
  • development of innovative data science methods in the context of data management
  • implementation of the developed methods in algorithms and software modules
  • integration and testing of software modules in platform environments
  • evaluation, documentation, and publication of the results in scientific conferences or journals
  • presentation of results at national and international conferences
  • technical supervision of undergraduate and graduate students
  • contribution to maintenance and documentation of IT platform environments

The position allows obtaining a PhD degree at a collaborating university.

Your qualifications:

  • Master degree in computer science, geoinformatics, or comparable engineering science studies
  • deep expertise in data and knowledge management, in particular data base implementation techniques, algorithms/data structures, and computer architectures
  • experience in working on complex research problems, on your own and in a team
  • strong programming skills in system-level programming, preferably C/C++
  • scientific contributions on data management research problems through publications in conferences or journals
  • ideally experience in the development of index structures for annotated, temporal-geodetic objects (e.g., databases, geo-temporal index structures, multi-dimensional index structures, query processing)
  • basic knowledge in software engineering required
  • fluency in written and oral English, desire to learn German

Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives.
