The Helicopter Department within the Institute of Flight Systems at DLR, Braunschweig performs research on various aspects of rotor and flight systems for rotary wing aircraft, some of which require the use of software tools. Comprehensive analyses (eg. DLR's S4) are computer programs which bring together advanced models of structures, dynamics and aerodynamics for predicting the performance and loads of rotors. The free-wake model is a high-fidelity method for modeling wakes of helicopter and wind-turbine rotors using vortex theories. The free-wake implementation within S4 has been, recently, updated and modernized.
The primary tasks of the student would be to carry out validation studies of S4 in general and the free-wake implementation in particular. Validations will need to be carried out on both Windows and Linux workstations. There is a possibility of extending this work to a thesis if circumstances permit.
