Your mission:

DLR-Air Transportation Systems is looking for master students (preferably studying in Hamburg) who are willing to join the researches on air traffic flow management (ATFM) topics.
Enhancing ATM network awareness through synchronization analysis,  DLR- air transportation systems (together with ILT institute of TUHH) is investigating topics that focus on systematic features of air transportation. One of these features is system resiliency. Resilience is the capacity of a system to recover from disruptions (also referred as extreme events). Generally, resilience will cover two main subjects: first, state definition and then recovery mechanisms. This study will contribute to air traffic management (ATM) network state definition by monitoring corrective actions.

More specifically, in Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM), the intention is to match available airport and ATC capacities with requested demand from airlines. ATFM addresses different approaches in dealing with imbalances between demand and capacity. One of the key drivers in selecting the most efficient approach is ATM Network state. In order to enhance network state awareness, ATFM group is working on implementing event synchronization method that has been proved to be efficient in climate studies. In this research the goal is to upgrade current results by performing synchronization analysis over ATFM regulations. This master thesis will be supported by our ATFM team to go through the following steps:

  • Literature Review on ATFM, and Synchronization analysis
  • Introduction to data structure and related terminology
  • Modeling and case study design
  • Model implementation (MATLAB or Python) and work on regulation data
  • Model validation and presentation of results
  • Discussion of future work and documentation

Your qualifications:

  • Studies in Air Transportation & Traffic Eng. , Industrial Eng. , Mathematics etc.
  • Motivation and ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Programming skills (preferably MATLAB or Python)
  • Knowledge sharing and Reporting abilities
  • High working knowledge of English
  • Good academic records
  • Background in ATM
