Your mission:

The DLR Institute of Optical Sensor Systems investigates and develops active and passive optical sensor systems for satellites, flying platforms and robotic systems. The Department Terahertz and Laser Spectroscopy is involved with the development and use of new innovative technologies and instruments for the terahertz spectral range. Even today, terahertz systems are applied in different fields such as security imaging and the specific detection of gases by spectral fingerprints.

We offer a PhD position at the labs of the DLR involved in sensitive gas sensing based on terahertz spectroscopy. Different spectroscopic concepts will be developed and characterized with respect to applications such as the detection of safety- and security-relevant gases or research on the terrestrial as well as extraterrestrial atmospheres. The work will also deal with multi-variate data analysis methods for the identification and quantification of compounds in complex gas mixtures. A large variety of research activities in our labs offers cross-sectional insights in other topics.

The PhD position is carried out in the framework of the Helmholtz Research School on Security Technologies (HRSST). The objectives of the HRSST are the education of young scientists and the support of excellent research in technological field relevant for civil security.

Your working time will be 19,25 hours per week.

Your qualifications:

  • master studies in physics or similar with good or very good grades (students finishing soon are also welcome to apply)
  • practical knowledge and interest in optics and spectroscopy
  • basic programming skills (preferably in LabVIEW)
  • motivation for experimental work on interesting research questions
