Your mission:

The Optical Communication Systems Group develops – among other things – optical communication systems for aircraft and small satellites. Furthermore, it carries out measurement- and demonstration-campaigns, either with systems developed by DLR or in international cooperation. Therefore, the group operates the Optical Ground Station Oberpfaffenhofen (OGS-OP) as well as the Transportable Optical Ground Station.

Examples of systems that have been developed by the group are the Free-Space Experimental Laser Terminal II (FELT II), which has been tested aboard DLR’s Dornier 228 since 2008. Furthermore, within the project OSIRIS, optical communication systems that are optimized especially for small satellites are developed. In order to enable robust communication links, the group also deals with the development and implementation of Forward Error Correction (FEC) algorithms which are optimized for free-space optical communication links.

Your tasks include:

  • participation in challenging research projects concerning free-space optical communication systems for satellites, especially within DLR’s OSIRIS program
  • development of Electronics for satellite payloads
  • design and optimization of control systems for laser beam control in free-space optical communication systems
  • integration and Test of payload subsystems
  • scientific evaluation of satellite measurements
  • programming of embedded hardware for Space use, e.g. in C/C++

Your qualifications:

  • successfully finished scientific studies in Electrical or Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics, or similar studies (Master)
  • knowledge and practical experience in the design, development and test of electric circuits
  • knowledge and practical experience in control theory, as well as in the design, simulation and optimization of controllers
  • practical experience with the development of opto-/electromechanical systems desirable
  • knowledge of design and simulation of electric circuits with typical software, as e.g. EAGLE, Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, OrCAD
  • at least basic knowledge in C/c++
  • basic knowledge in Embedded Programming and Development
  • basic knowledge in space technology and electrical circuit development for space applications desirable
  • basic knowledge in project management desirable
