The DLR Space Administration is responsible for the development and implementation of the German Space Program on behalf of the German Federal Government. The German space program activities include the National Program for Space and Innovation, the DLR Research and Development Program, as well as the German contributions to the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Meteorological Satellite Organization (EUMETSAT).
The Product Assurance and Safety department of the DLR Space Administration is responsible for the definition and controlling of product assurance activities for and acceptance of equipment and satellites that the DLR Space Administration or German national government grant and state funded research and technology development projects intend to launch into space or shall be brought to the ISS. The department has the role of the client and is aiming for a modern quality control system, established between client and contractor. On the basis of the European Space Standards (ECSS) and taking into account other well-established standards (e.g. ISO), product specific individual requirements for product safety are stipulated in the contracts and are checked and accepted on completion over the project term.
In particular, in order to ensure the quality, low-risk and safe operation of the instruments, satellites, facilities in national and international space projects, software quality requirements are implemented in the projects / projects. Compliance with the contractually agreed services and the project-specific requirements is verified by checking the performance records and activities over the entire project life-time.
