The DLR Space Administration is responsible for the development and implementation of the German Space Program on behalf of the German Federal Government. The German space program activities include the National Program for Space and Innovation, the DLR Research and Development Program, as well as the German contributions to the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Meteorological Satellite Organization (EUMETSAT).

The Product Assurance and Safety department of the DLR Space Administration is responsible for the definition and controlling of product assurance activities for and acceptance of equipment and satellites that the DLR Space Administration or German national government grant and state funded research and technology development projects intend to launch into space or shall be brought to the ISS. The department has the role of the client and is aiming for a modern quality control system, established between client and contractor. On the basis of the European Space Standards (ECSS) and taking into account other well-established standards (e.g. ISO), product specific individual requirements for product safety are stipulated in the contracts and are checked and accepted on completion over the project term.

In particular, in order to ensure the quality, low-risk and safe operation of the instruments, satellites, facilities in national and international space projects, software quality requirements are implemented in the projects / projects. Compliance with the contractually agreed services and the project-specific requirements is verified by checking the performance records and activities over the entire project life-time.

As head of the Software Quality Assurance Discipline in the Product Assurance and Safety department, you will have, among other things, the following tasks:

  • development and definition of basic professional guidelines and standards in the field
  • software product and quality assurance management of the instruments, satellites, facilities in DLR's Space Administration space projects
  • conduct and implementation of PA/QA technical support for the projects
    • ongoing higher-level monitoring of software quality management and software product and quality assurance in the development and production of specified software
    • release of product and quality assurance measures
    • release of implementation, approval and monitoring and controlling the software quality assurance program at the contractor
    • higher-level (client-side) qualification and test monitoring and support for the specified software
    • identification of deviations from the technical requirements
    • release of corrective and monitoring of measures in the event of discrepancies or errors
    • responsible representation of software product and quality assurance measures towards project management, contractors of DLR, launcher and space agencies
  • check of reports and certificates etc. and active participation in reviews throughout the life cycle of projects for verification of the contracted services
    • evaluation and assessment of software quality assurance analyses and test results
    • evaluation of operating, installation instructions
  • conduct of software inspections
  • acceptance and operation release of software systems, products and applications
  • detailed compilation and tailoring of project specific software quality assurance & software security requirements
  • implementation of Software PA/QA technical support for projects in contract negotiations with contractors, space agencies and other partners of the DLR
  • review and evaluation of offers and proposals taking into account the specified software quality assurance requirements and assessment of the quality capability of the contractor
  • project-related pre-audits and assessment of the degree of maturity of software processes of contractors (supplier evaluation)
  • support for the operations teams when software related & software security relevant situations occur
  • representation of DLR Space Administration and voting member in relevant ECSS bodies and working groups
  • monitoring applicable scientific and technological trends and maintaining state-of-the-art expertise
  • advising and supporting the projects and the German industry on questions and developments related to software product and quality assurance
  • representation of software product assurance measures internally and externally

Your qualifications:

  • scientific or engineering university degree at master level in computer science, physics, aerospace engineering or
  • engineering with specialization in the area of software quality assurance or equivalent qualification
  • demonstrable and up-to-date experience in the required field of Expertise
  • relevant professional experience in software quality assurance or software engineering on development, manufacturing, testing, maintenance, software process evaluation and software evaluation; preferably long-term practical work and experience
  • relevant experience in the field of product and quality assurance; long-term experience welcome
  • knowledge and experience in the application of relevant regulatory frameworks (ECSS, MIL, DIN, ISO); intimate knowledge preferred
  • knowledge and experience in risk management, fault analysis and methods and tools of product and Quality assurance
  • ideally experience in project support and monitoring of industrial activities, including participation in reviews
  • knowledge and experience in the use of software tools and methods for software product and quality assurance
  • good English and German skills in written and spoken language; preferrably good knowledge of a second foreign language
  • high degree of self-responsibility, results-oriented action, team skills, initiative and communication skills, ability to
  • interdisciplinary cooperation as well as sense of responsibility and willingness to cooperate in domestic as well as international teams.
  • competent handling of MS-Office products;
  • willingness to frequent missions
  • willingness for security check acc. Federal Security Review Act is required
