Around 190 scientists – engineers, psychologists and computer scientists – work at the Institute of Transportation Systems on the locations Braunschweig and Berlin. They carry out research and development for automotive and railway systems and for the traffic management.

Work with us on numerous national and international projects together with our research partners and industry to develop cooperative and highly automated traffic systems on road, rail and in the air in order to increase efficiency, comfort and safety in traffic, especially in urban areas. We concentrate our research and development on automotive and rail systems, traffic and mobility management as well as intermodality and local public transport. The key objectives of our work are: Safety, efficiency, sustainability, economy and quality. Our research always focuses on the entire transport system with all its interactions.

To achieve these goals, cross-domain methods of sensor- and data-supported perception and environment detection are necessary. By knowing its own position and the current situation in which the traffic system is currently located, it can plan and execute its next steps automatically. After all, the networking and cooperation of automated rail, road and air vehicles in a coordinated overall system offer completely new possibilities that need to be researched and utilized for our society.

As part of your work, you will work with the Sensor Systems Group on topics including the following:

  • Research, concepts and application of machine learning methods and methods of artificial intelligence for environmental perception and ego-localization

  • Processing of sensor (raw) data, evaluation of sensors and possible applications as well as integration of sensors and data processing methods into automated systems

  • Development of methods for combining data and information from different sources

  • Conceptual further development of the topic area on the basis of current research results

  • Conception, implementation and evaluation of scientific experiments with the institute's facilities

  • Publication and presentation of research and project results in a national and international environment

  • Collaboration in project acquisition and preparation of grant applications

For your research, DLR offers you an integrated tool chain with numerous laboratories, (connectable) simulators, automated test rigs and research infrastructure in the field such as the Intelligent Mobility (AIM) application platform or the Test Bed Lower Saxony.

Your qualifications:

  • University degree (diploma or master's degree) in computer or information science, engineering or a comparable field of study
  • Special knowledge in the field of machine learning
  • Safe handling of methods of artificial intelligence and machine learning through several years of project work
  • Sound knowledge in the field of fusion of data and information, as well as object recognition, classification and tracking, sensor data fusion and filtering methods, e.g. Extended Kalman Filter, machine vision and implementation of image processing algorithms
  • Several years of experience in software developmentVery good programming skills with (C++, /Python using Linux and Windows
  • Several years of professional experience in project-based research at national and international level and in project management
  • Experience in the acquisition of national and international projects) and knowledge of relevant tools (e.g. cmake, git, svn)
  • Passion for innovative research, scientific and systematic working methods, motivation and eagerness to perform
  • Very good knowledge of written and spoken English

  • Doctorate in computer science or similar with thematic reference to machine learning is a plus
  • Experience with robotics and image processing systems such as ROS and OpenCV is a plus
  • German language skills are a plus
