Contribute to the design of the future of Unmanned Aviation! Urbanization, individualization and environmental protection. Under the pressure of the 21st century’s emerging mobility problems, traffic domains are relying on new technologies such as electric propulsion and higher levels of automation. As a result, the capacity limits of the current transport systems will have to be addressed by considering completely new transport concepts with high market potentials. Representative for the latter is Urban Air Mobility (UAM): the transport of goods and passengers with highly automated aircraft in urban areas.

The DLR Institute for Flight Guidance has been researching for several years concepts and technologies that enable the integration of UAS into controlled and uncontrolled airspace. This research is bundled in the institute’s research group on "Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)". One of the key research aspects currently lies in technologies and concepts designed to ensure the safe integration of UAS, drones and air taxis into low-level and urban airspace. Therefore, research activities focus on a concept for airspace and air traffic management in a future European U-Space.

The DLR cross-sectional project “Advanced Mobility” focuses on future mobility concepts in urban areas, where all modes of transport are often used in parallel in the same traffic area and have to be coordinated with each other to enable efficient traffic flows. The system perspective of this research area is to provide organization, coordination and cooperation of parallel used vehicles in the air, on the road and rail as well as on water. In doing so, the requirements of users (e.g., entire travel chains), society (e.g., environmental impact or safety) and all other stakeholders (e.g., infrastructure providers) and their effects on future vehicle and traffic concepts are being considered.

As part of this activity, an air taxi concept will be developed. This includes the use case of a passenger transport from a city-near airport to dedicated connection points with other traffic modes in the inner city area. Concepts for the design of the route network, the design of appropriate landing/transfer infrastructure - such as VertiPorts and VertiStops - within the urban area must be developed and validated. At the same time, concepts that enable the simultaneous operation of air taxis and traditional air traffic at the airport should be considered and adapted. For this challenging activity, our interdisciplinary team seeks reinforcement in concept creation, modeling, software development and validation.

Your qualifications:

  • academic degree (diploma/master) in engineering (transport), computer science, mathematics or a comparable field of study
  • very good knowledge in Air Traffic Management
  • knowledge in modelling technical systems
  • good knowledge in Unmanned Aircraft Systems and U-space
  • experience with modeling and simulation tools
  • programming knowledge, for example in C++ or MATLAB is a plus
  • independent working style
  • enjoy working independently and scientifically in a team
  • passion for innovative research
