The Hamburg-based DLR Institute for System Architectures in Aeronautics considers aviation to be a large system, which ranges from the transport system to the aircraft and the production of subcomponents. The focus is on the interaction of all elements in this system of systems.

The role of the job holder is to develop methods that enable automated real-time planning of production processes as well as integration into the design process.

The goal is to develop a knowledge-based production model that links the currently running production processes with automated planning so that rapid rescheduling can be carried out in the manufacturing and assembly processes. In addition, with a link to the design, optimizations should be made possible, which allow a choice between different production and assembly processes in the planning, whereby dead times in production can be prevented and manufacturing processes and production processes can already be considered in the design process.

Building an active bidirectional link between design and manufacturing allows a variety of new options, such as to consider automation of production or innovative production methods already in the design phase. Also, the effects of manufacturing or fit inaccuracies on the installation times can be estimated. Thus, for each manufacturing process, assumptions can be made regarding the manufacturing efficiency and robustness of new cabin designs that can not be met today in a design ideally adopted. The insights gained from digitization will be used to explore new and innovative manufacturing, assembly, installation and automation processes, or to develop new agile and bidirectional co-design methods that will be demonstrated digitally and realistically by the job holder.

Your qualifications:

  • Academic degree (MSc.) in Computer Science / Aerospace Engineering / Mechanical Engineering or in a comparable field
  • Good programming skills, preferably knowledge in using Python, Java-Script, Git
  • Proven communication skills, strong self-motivation and ability to work in international teams
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English, German is an asset
