At the Institute of Communications and Navigation of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Neustrelitz, we are developing new technologies for the navigation of highly automated and autonomous ships for maritime and inland applications. We want to expand our team, which deals with the technological and scientific challenges of accurate and reliable positioning of inland vessels using Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and additional sensors. This work forms the basis for the development of driver assistance systems such as automatic entering of a waterway lock, which is one of the most complex challenges on the way to the development of autonomous inland vessels. The focus of your work will be the development of a real-time Precise Point Positioning (PPP) algorithm that meets the accuracy and availability requirements of inland navigation. In particular, the long convergence times of classical PPP methods have to be reduced in order to quickly obtain a highly accurate position again, e.g. after a bridge passage and the associated shadowing of the satellite signals. Multi-antenna and multi-sensor approaches are also envisaged for this purpose.

Your main tasks are:

  • Research in the field of navigation of highly automated and autonomous vessels
  • Research in the field of utilization of GNSS for safety-critical applications  
  • Development of Precise Point Positioning (PPP) algorithms for high-precision and reliable positioning of inland vessels
  • Development of algorithms for determining position, speed and orientation using multi-antenna systems and additional sensors
  • Software implementation of the algorithms as processors in a  C++ development framework and integration of these processors into a real-time demonstration platform;
  • Planning and execution of experimental tests as well as their evaluation and validation;
  • Documentation of development results in the form of technical reports, publications and conference contributions;
  • Participation in the development of a test bed for autonomous inland vessels

Your qualifications:

  • Finished study of geodesy, satellite navigation or related engineering disciplines (Master)
  • Very good knowledge in at least one of the areas satellite geodesy, radio navigation, signal processing
  • Expert in the field of GNSS based position determination
  • Good knowledge in programming in matlab / python and c++
  • Knowledge of the operating systems Windows and Linux
  • Familiar with Office tools
  • Very good English skills (speaking and writing);
  • Good German skills (speaking and writing);
  • Very good analytical skills;
  • Ability to work in interdisciplinary teams
  • Self-sustained creative and goal-oriented working behavior
  • Expert in the field of GNSS carrier phase based positioning methods such as PPP or RTK
  • PhD in geodesy, satellite navigation or related engineering disciplines
  • Long term experience in project work;
  • Long term experience in the preparation of project-related technical reports and publications
