Direct solar irradiation is essential for the use of Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants. Hence CSP plants are built in places with high direct solar irradiation. In general these are arid regions. This is a challenge since CSP plants also rely on the availability of water.

Water is used for various tasks in a CSP plant. The three main water consumers are wet-cooling, mirror cleaning and steam cycle blow down.

In the EU project "SOLWARIS", technologies and methods are being developed to reduce the water consumption of CSP plants. DLR is developing an O&M optimizer to help the power plant operator to run his CSP plant as efficiently as possible.

The optimizer relies on a performance model that calculates the power generation and water consumption of a power plant in every time step. Developing this performance model is subject of this student thesis. The DLR already owns a well-tested annual simulation / yield forecasting tool called Greenius. However, due to its user-friendly interface, it is not flexible enough for optimization calculations. The institute can support the student with its extensive experience in the field of simulation of CSP power plants.

New is, that the performance model will calculate the water consumption of the power plant. In addition, some of the water-saving technologies newly developed in the project must also be modelled.

The implementation of the optimizer is planned in Matlab or Phyton.

Steps:

  • Adaption of a performance model, which calculates the power generation of a CSP plant in an annual simulation
  • Modeling the water consumption of a CSP plant
  • Modeling new water saving technologies
  • Testing the model by simulating an existing CSP plant with and without the water saving technologies
  • Comparison to Greenius or CU- Performance model

Your qualifications:

  • Field of study: (power) engineering, sciences, computer science, etc.
  • good analytical skills
  • Basic knowledge of Matlab, Python or other programming languages
  • good oral and written skills in German and English language
