"Cutting-edge research requires excellent minds – particularly more females – at all levels. Launch your mission with us and send in your application now!" Prof. Pascale Ehrenfreund - Chair of the DLR Executive Board

Electronics systems play a major role in modern commercial aircraft. Many functions of the aircraft are realized by embedded systems. The number of such functions is steadily growing due to the increasing automation of air traffic, e.g. autonomous flying. Safety and security is of utmost importance for aircraft embedded systems. System safety is dealing with realization of systems which can be operated with an acceptable low level of risk to harm people or property, whereas systems security deals with means that enable the system to function correctly under malicious attack.

The recently founded working group "Safe and Secure Embedded Systems" shall research innovative architectures and development methods for future aircraft embedded systems, whereby safety and security shall be considered holistically. The focus here is on technologies such as modern communication systems, multicore processors and FPGAs, as well as consistent model-based design methods for the system architectures. In addition, further development potential in the area of System on Module and Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) shall be examined. The applications are in the area of autonomous and manned aircraft in the civil and military sector.

As a group leader, you define and plan the detailed scientific scope of the work group. You will identify the scientific core topics with regard to innovation and third-party funding potential. The acquisition of projects as well as the instruction of doctoral students and young scientists is also part of you job. You conduct own research projects in the core area of the working group and publish your results in specialist journals and at international conferences.

Your work environment will be our dynamic and innovative department. Besides the high level of team spirit, you can expect an excellent infrastructure with the latest equipment and development environments. We actively support you in advancing your professional and scientific career.

Your qualifications:

  • Masters degree in the field of communications engineering, computer engineering, computer science or electrical engineering with relevant specialization
  • long term experience in the field of design of embedded systems, software, hardware or system design of real-time capable systems through study or final theses
  • experience in the area of model-based system design, especially with UML or SysML
  • experience in the field of development methods and standards for safety and security critical systems, preferably in the aviation sector
  • very good spoken and written German and English skills
  • completed PhD in the area of embedded systems desired

Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (m/f/non-binary).
