"Cutting-edge research requires excellent minds – particularly more females – at all levels. Launch your mission with us and send in your application now!" Prof. Pascale Ehrenfreund - Chair of the DLR Executive Board

On the way to continuously reducing climate gas emissions, the realization of new systems for providing usable energy from renewable sources is essential. Wind as an indirect form of the energy provided by the sun is used intensively today to generate electrical energy. This energy is often converted back directly into heat, for example in the form of electric heat for heating homes or commercial real estate. The conversion into electrical energy for transport over long distances is of great advantage, but also involves considerable costs for generators, power electronics and transmission systems. However, in the industrial environment, direct generation of heat with the aid of wind turbines can prove to be attractive, since significant cost reductions and improvements in reliability are expected due to the small number of components.

Together with other DLR institutes, the Institute of Flight Systems is realizing a demonstrator platform for the direct generation of heat using wind turbines. For this purpose, a small wind turbine with an output of 10 – 50 kW is to be set up and put into operation. As part of the job, you model the wind turbine in order to be able to test the heat generation system using hardware in the loop simulations. You also design the control loops and the emergency shutdown system to enable safe operation of the demonstrator platform. Further, you’ll participate intensively in the realization of the system and implement and test your controllers in practical operation.

You will become part of a highly motivated and dynamic team. We offer you a comprehensive program for further education, the opportunity for continuous scientific exchange at national and international conferences, and the environment for your personal academic qualification, e.g. obtaining a PhD. If you bring a high level of motivation and commitment as well as the creativity necessary for scientific work, we look forward to your application.

Your qualifications:

  • Master degree (or equivalent) in electrical engineering, energy technology, mechatronics, or mechanical engineering with a relevant specialization
  • very good knowledge in the area of modeling and simulation of mechatronic systems
  • good knowledge of a modeling and simulation environment for dynamic systems, e.g. MATLAB / Simulink
  • very good spoken and written German and English skills
  • experience in the area modeling and control of wind turbines is of advantage

Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (m/f/non-binary). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
