The protection and security of critical infrastructures is an essential basis for the economic prosperity and stability of states and societies. The Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infra-structures is dedicated to this task and develops concepts, procedures and technologies that can be used both to assess and to increase the security of critical infrastructures.

The department "Strategy and ELSA Research" complements the research projects of the insti-tute to ensure that projects are carried out with a high degree of responsibility towards society. For this purpose, the department bundles competences from the fields of law, humanities and social sciences and uses them in an interdisciplinary way. In addition, research is conducted on ethical, legal and social aspects of innovative fields of technology and relevant threat scenarios.

The position offers the opportunity to dedicate oneself to a task of particular importance for the Institute and society. It is expected that these topics will be approached with interdisciplinary approaches and that research will be conducted in close cooperation with internal and external stakeholders in order to meet the complexity of the task at hand. It is expected that practicable solutions will be developed that can be applied in the context of the various technology devel-opment projects and that will increase the acceptance of new technologies by future users (e.g. authorities and organizations with security tasks).

The position comprises the following principal activities:

  • research into the social implications, framework conditions and requirements for responsible security research
  • conception and implementation of accompanying research on research projects to take account of societal aspects in the context of security research
  • research into the societal aspects of hybrid threats, among others

Your qualifications:

  • completed scientific university studies (diploma or master) in the field of social science (political science, sociology, peace and conflict research or comparable).
  • knowledge in natural sciences or life sciences (e.g. physics, biology, chemistry, life sci-ence or similar) desirable
  • several years of experience in the social-scientific consideration of issues related to ethi-cal, social, technical or ecological contexts
  • in-depth knowledge of the use of technology by authorities and organisations with security tasks (i.e. drone use by fire brigades, AI use by police, etc.)
  • several years of experience in dealing with industrial partners, non-governmental interest groups, committees and decision-makers in public administration, if possible also in joint projects
  • mediation skills in cooperation with heterogeneous interest groups
  • excellent verbal and written expression as well as business fluency in English
  • strong communication and cooperation skills, persuasiveness, assertiveness, self-confidence and ability to work in a team
  • readiness for extended security clearance (Ü2) equivalent "NATO/EU SECRET
  • published papers are an advantage
  • enjoyment of and willingness for interdisciplinary work
  • experience in the supervision of student work
