At the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics of the DLR, namely within the Adaptive Biointerfaces Group, our research topics include the detection of human motion intention from diverse biosignals from the muscles.

Our group works mainly in the field of prosthetics in order to help transradial amputees regain a maximum of their abilities: we use biosignals to identify different muscle patterns in the forearm and control a dexterous prosthetic hand. In addition to that, we also apply our knowledge to teleoperation of robots for future space exploration or for dangerous environments where precise bimanipulation can be needed.

In prosthetics, and more particularly in myocontrol, amputees are facing the problem of the limb position effect, e.g. the patterns associated to a certain hand action are modified when their arm is moving, therefore inducing an instability in the prosthesis grasp.

In order to study the influence of gravity compensation on the limb position effect, we are conducting a parabolic flight experiment during the second and third weeks of November and are searching for a student available starting as soon as possible to help with the preparation.

Your tasks will be:

  • getting familiar with the existing system and hardware
  • making copies of the existing hardware (mainly 3D printing)
  • software testing
  • pre-tests with the subjects
  • helping in assembling, testing and assisting as an operator (in flight) during the period 08.11.2020-21.11.2020 in Bordeaux, FR
  • microcontroller programming if time allows

Your qualifications:

  • Master/Bachelor student
  • due to the size of the plane and the arm movements: participants maximum height is 2.25m from the feet to the tip of the middle finger with arm extended above head. Please state this exact height in your CV. Students being under it will be prioritized but the ones above will still be considered.
  • available as soon as possible and until end of November minimum (state your availability period in your CV)
  • Having the allowance of your university and being able to move to Germany to register. Due to the current Covid-19 situation, we can for the moment unfortunately only hire people currently in Germany or able to move to Germany. We do not send contracts abroad. Additionally, the student should be willing to work home-office (at least for the beginning).
  • Passing the medical examination required for participating in a parabolic flight.
  • very good skills in programming (C#, C/C++)
  • some knowledge in 3D printing
  • good skills in microcontroller programming is a plus
  • experience in Arduino is a plus
  • autonomy and organisation
