Type of employment

The ensuring of safety and security of critical infrastructures is an essential basis for the economic prosperity and stability of states and societies. The Institute for the Protection of Terrestrial Infrastructures (PI) is dedicated to this task and develops concepts, procedures and technologies that serve to assess and improve the security status of infrastructures. The following three levels are considered: people, technology and the overall system.

Within the institute the task of the department "Detection Systems" is the development of procedures for the delivery of processed and already partially interpreted measurement results for critical infrastructures. Data acquisition methods range from the evaluation of large-scale data (e.g. satellite data or weather) to detailed measurements within the infrastructures. The span from one-time measurements for model initialization to data acquisition in real time for determining the operating status or a situation picture in case of an incident is covered. The department is divided into two thematic fields: the detection and identification of CBRNE agents and the geometric-functional-physical survey of buildings, building parts and system components. The first mentioned field comprises three working groups - "Cyber-Physical Systems", "C/B/E Detection" and "R/N/EM Radiation Detection".

The open position lies within the working group "C/B/E Detection". You will mainly be involved in the development and implementation of concepts for the protection of terrestrial infrastructures against biological hazards. The execution of research and development projects in this field will also be one of your tasks.

The position includes the following principal activities:

  • Continuous research on the state of the art in the field of detection of biological hazards
  • Evaluating the possible applications of readily available sensors, detectors, sensor systems, concepts and technologies for monitoring and protecting critical infrastructures against biological hazards
  • Planning and performing testing series
  • Design, development, evaluation and optimization of new sensors, detectors, sensor systems and technologies for monitoring and protecting critical infrastructures against biological hazards
  • Execution of research and development projects

Your qualifications:

  • Completed scientific university studies (university diploma or master's degree) in biology, life sciences, biochemistry or a comparable subject
  • Extensive experience in the handling of research and development projects
  • Experience in technical monitoring of biological safety laboratories of levels S1/S2
  • Practical experience in the field of statistical data analysis
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Willingness to work cooperatively
  • A doctorate is preferable, but not a necessary condition
  • Good knowledge of the German language (level B2 or higher) desired
  • Experience in the field of protecting the general public from CBRNE threats
  • Experience in the execution of third-party funded projects
  • Experience in cooperating with industrial partners, preferably in joint projects

Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
