Development of numerical models in the field of solar fuels and commodities production

Starting date

1 March 2021

Duration of contract

2 years

Remuneration

up to the German TVöD 13

Type of employment

Full-time (part-time possible)

At DLR, processes and plant technology are being developed to produce so-called "solar fuels" such as hydrogen or "solar chemicals" using concentrated solar radiation. These processes include, for example, the reforming of hydrocarbons or thermochemical processes for splitting water and CO2, e.g. also as part of CO2 recycling paths. Central activities of DLR, Institute of Future Fuels in this context are the development and experimental qualification of components and materials such as redox systems or catalysts in the laboratory, as well as key components such as absorbers, solar receivers and prototype systems for fuel generation in the solar furnace in Cologne or solar simulator Synlight in Jülich. In addition, the technology must then be transferred to a solar tower system for demonstration purposes. This involves not only planning and carrying out experimental work, but also designing numerical models to run simulations. The results of DLR's solar research contribute to making a rational and environmentally friendly energy supply technically and economically possible.

Your tasks are:

  • development of numerical models to describe the thermo-mechanical, optical and chemical behavior of solar-chemical components and processes
  • modeling and simulation of the steady state and transient behavior of key components such as solar receivers
  • validation of the models by planning and carrying out suitable experiments in the laboratory and in solar plants at DLR
  • design of solar tower systems for solar chemical processes
  • development of plant concepts and process schemes
  • scientific processing of work packages in projects
  • preparation of projects in the field of solar fuels
  • communication with project partners in international projects in English
  • supervision of bachelor and master students

Your qualifications:

  • Master Degree in in process engineering, mechanical engineering, physical chemistry, physics, or similar
  • PhD or Doctorate
  • several years of experience with numerical modeling and simulation, especially CFD simulation
  • experience with solar treatment of solids and fluids
  • several years of experience in thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid dynamics of solar thermal processes
  • international experience
  • personal, social and linguistic skills: independence, ability to work in a team and cooperate, interdisciplinary collaboration, commitment and willingness to learn
  • experience in numerical modelling of heat and momentum transfer in porous media is desired
  • experience in inorganic and organic chemistry is advantageous

Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
