The department for Software for Space Systems and Interactive Visualization of the Institute of Software Technology at DLR is responsible for the development and integration of hardware drivers, flight software as well as ground support tools for various space missions. In order to improve the productivity and maintainability of the software, model-driven development approaches are followed in many of our projects including MAIUS (Materiewellen-Interferometrie unter Schwerelosigkeit) and BECCAL (Bose Einstein Condensates and Cold Atomic Laboratory).
The MAIUS-2 and BECCAL missions aim to investigate different approaches to perform experiments with ultra-cold and condensed atoms under microgravity conditions. The first is expected to operate on board the International Space Station (ISS), while the second one is expected to fly on board of a sounding rocket. Both missions will need to be able to conduct experiments, which will have been defined a priori, in an autonomous or semi-autonomous way. The software consists of three components, which are common in both missions: Experiment Control Software (ECS), Experiment Design Tools (EDTs) and Ground Control Software (GCS).
The ECS is the software running on the on-board computer of the experiment which controls the experiments electronics and communicates with the GCS. The EDT are the software components used by the physicists in order to create a fully functional experiment and generate input data sets for the ECS. Finally, the GCS are the set of applications running on the ground station which communicates with the ECS, starts the experiments, collects data and distributes it. Our department is responsible for developing the ECS and the EDTs.
Being an integral part of the development team, you will assist computer scientists to develop high-quality software. You will help with the integration of the ECS and the EDT software components and assist with the verification of the overall system. Furthermore, you will write test-cases for the Eclipse-based EDT models which includes the textual as well as the graphical domain specific languages (DSLs). The test-cases are then executed in the GitLab continuous integration system. Moreover, you will automate the UI tests using the Java SWTBot framework.
