The "EO Data Science" department develops modern signal processing and AI processes for current and future earth observation missions. It is involved in a large number of third-party projects and a large international network.

The expected tasks will consist of our own scientific research on the topic of handling large amounts of geodata (especially Earth Observation (EO)-data) and geodata processing. This is based on the implementation, maintenance, and usage of specific geodatabases. 
The tasks described below require specific knowledge and outstanding expertise. In order to meet the requirements of the position, extensive professional or research experience in the fields of geospatial databases, geo-informatics, data sciences, machine learning, artificial intelligence or related fields is required.

This position is intended to cover the field of spatial data processing and in particular to build and research spatial databases and their architectures.

The holder of the position will be responsible for the following tasks:
Own research on the topic handling large amounts of geodata and geodata processing 

  • literature research for AI methods in Earth Observation
  • independent research and expansion of scientific knowledge at the highest international level in the field of geo-data processing using novel AI procedures such as data fusion or deep learning
  • independent use of large infrastructures and with large data archives ("Big Data")
  • development and maintenance of a geo-database for EO-data and the integration of AI algorithms. Development of possibilities for AI4EO applications in geodatabases Development and documentation of novel methods for the solution of complex problems
  • setting impulses for working with geo-data and automatization of proven techniques in order to apply them in the department 
  • presentation of research results to a broad specialist public, e.g. through publication in high-ranking specialist journals and lectures at international conferences
  • The candidate should actively advise and support doctoral students and other scientists of the department in their daily research. Above all, the work area of geo-data processing and archiving are to be homogenized and simplified. The systematic data processing and storage should increase the efficiency of the department and facilitate joint work.

Your qualifications:

  • completed university degree (university diploma/master's degree) in computer science, geoinformatics, data science or comparable field of study
  • over 5 years of experience with EO data, geodata and Geodatabases (such as OpenDatacube abd Rasdamen)
  • experience in geo-referencing, digitization and geo-processing, creation, editing and management of large relational and geo-databases, as well as publishing services or working with Web Map Services
  • several years of professional experience in data science, machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI) or related fields
  • experience with Linux environments
  • experience with cloud servers
  • very good knowledge of the German and English language in spoken and written form
  • ability to interact with scientists at different levels
  • ability to work both independently and highly motivated in a team
  • strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Doctoral degree desired, but not required in case of special professional qualification
