The DLR’s Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics is working on the utilization of technologies of energy conversion that are efficient and accommodating on resources as well as on the accelerated utilization of renewable energies. Within this context the Department of Electrochemical Energy Technology at Stuttgart, Germany, invites applicants from all over the world to work with us.

Electrochemical reactors such as Solid oxide cells (SOCs) reactors can be operated in fuel cell or electrolysis mode and, due to their high efficiency, become an essential part of the energy transition in Germany. SOCs can be used both for energy storage in the form of hydrogen or hydrocarbons and for the efficient provision of electricity.
The High Temperature Systems and Processes (HTSP) Development group investigate how to scale up processes from laboratory test beds to large-scale plants through experimental and transient modelling activities. There are many modelling activities ongoing from cell level to system processes involving aspects such as controls, operation strategies, performance characterisation and data analysis which you could be involved in as part of your Master Thesis/Internship.

Your qualifications:

  • Working towards or hold a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Mechanical/Chemical Engineering or similar
  • Strong grasp of Thermodynamics and Engineering First principles (i.e. Mass and Energy Balances)
  • Strong mathematical modelling skills
  • Strong research skills and ability to work independently is highly desired
  • Proficiency in a programming language (i.e. Python, MATLAB, C++, Modelica, etc.)
