Conception and Design of a Spatial Filtering Structures for Multipath Reduction in Satellite Navigation Applications

The Antenna Group of the Institute for Communications and Navigation of DLR is strongly active in the development of new high-performance antennas for navigation and communication applications in the L and K band. Together with antenna design, the characterization of the antenna performance once installed in the final scenario is of paramount importance to guarantee its successful use in the navigation systems.

In particular, multipath (i.e. the reflection of signals coming from satellites and impinging on objects, buildings,..) is one important error source for precise navigation applications as well as for reference stations (for GNSS, GBAS, NavAids,…). It is therefore needed to investigate solutions to adopt in reference stations and capable of spatially filtering the signals impinging on the antenna, such as to diminish the impact of reflections from multipath-generating hotspots in the vicinity.

During the Master thesis,  you will analyse techniques for designing spatial filters, either made of dielectric or metallic structures, after which an optimized structure will be developed. Electromagnetic simulations will be performed to estimate their impact in reducing multipath within actual scenarios. Characterization of the improvement given by the structure through GNSS field tests will also be targeted.

The work embraces a multidisciplinary activity where RF know-how and numerical simulations, as well as hands-on engineering and measurements will need to be used. Good knowledge of electromagnetic simulators is advantageous.

Your qualifications:

  • Study in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering or similar
  • experience with RF and antenna design (with electromagnetic simulation software packages) is advantageous
  • experience with RF material characterization (and VNA measurement) is advantageous
  • interest in activity coupling electromagnetism and GNSS
