The Institute of Combustion Technology is an international renown research facility in the field of combustion science. Approximately 100 employees from various fields of specialisations utilise modern experimental facilities and numerical methods to design and optimise sophisticated technical combustion systems. The research on alternative biogenic and synthetic fuels (gaseous, liquid) – is a growing scientific field of our institute. Within our research topics the institute focusses on fuel combustion characterization, pollutant avoidance and fuel flexible designs of combustion applications. The key objective of the division of “Chemical Kinetics and Analytics” is the spanning of the bridge from fundamental research to applied science.
 
The position is assigned to the division of “Chemical Kinetics and Analytics”. You will conduct and initiate projects in the field of alternative aerospace fuels and are part in our mission to protect our climate and environment. As key personnel for numerical chemical kinetics you will create and apply numerical models for the preliminary design and optimization of technical combustion processes. Specifically, with your scientific expertise, you will develop and optimize chemical kinetic mechanisms. You will transfer and integrate these mechanisms in newly designed simplified simulation tools (e.g. quasi-dimensional reactor networks), which set the basis for the technical preliminary design. With your technical understanding, your work will be the link between the numerical model and the application, to design our sustainable and clean combustion systems for tomorrow.  
 
The holder of the position will be responsible for the following tasks:
  • create and optimize chemical kinetic reaction models for aerospace fuels
  • design and apply simplified simulations tools for the modelling of technical combustion processes
  • collaborate in national and international research projects in the field of numerical chemical kinetics of alternative fuels
  • evaluate and interpret results in regard to the effects on combustion processes or gas turbine combustors, respectively
  • conception of research proposals including planning of time schedules, milestones and finances
  • generate scientific networks with internal and external partners of the DLR
  • process and present your scientific results and conclusions
  • create publications on international scientific conferences and peer reviewed journals

Your qualifications:

  • completed academic university degree (M. Sc. / university diploma) in aerospace engineering, engineering, chemistry, physics or comparable subject
  • doctoral degree desired, but not necessary if qualification is sufficient desirable
  • several years of professional experience in chemical kinetic modelling
  • practical experience with the application of chemical kinetic simulation tools (e.g. Cantera or CHEMKIN)
  • solid programming skills, preferably in Python
  • experiences in project management
  • basic knowledge in fluid mechanics and technical combustion
  • capacity for teamwork, curiosity, open-mindedness and the enthusiasm to engage in new scientific fields
  • very good written and spoken English knowledge (negotiating skills)
  • good written and spoken German language skills
