We, the Solar Energy Meteorology team within the Institute for Solar Research are looking for a motivated meteorologist/physicist/agronomist/engineer/natural scientist (or similar) for a PhD thesis to develop a yield model for different concepts of Agrivoltaics. Agrivoltaics describes the combination of electricity production and agricultural use of arable land. This combination can be realized by e.g. elevating PV modules to cultivate crops below or by mounting PV modules on top of horticultural greenhouses. Our aim is to optimize the possible combinations of different PV technologies, crop types and economical yields from food and electricity production.

Your tasks will be:

  • Implementation of a combined model for agricultural crop yield and PV installations considering economic, energetic and meteorological determining factors
  • Comparative study of agrivoltaic concepts and conventional PV parks or agricultural food production
  • Site-dependent economic optimization of selected agri PV systems
  • Validation of the model for selected agri PV concepts
  • Document and publish your scientific results in papers and international conferences

Your qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics, meteorology, agronomics, engineering, natural science or similar
  • Some basic programming skills (Python and/or Matlab) or at least high interest to program
  • Interest in energy transition and agriculture and the related technical and economic questions
  • Passion for innovative research, scientific and systematic way of working
  • Ability to work together and individually as part of an international team, on both experiments and simulations
  • Good communication skills in general and good oral and written expression in English language
  • Further helpful although not required qualifications are a degree accepted by the RWTH Aachen’s PhD program as and the command of Spanish (alternatively the interest to learn Spanish is required)
