The Institute of Atmospheric Physics investigates the physics and chemistry of the global atmosphere from the Earth's surface up to the upper boundary of the middle atmosphere at about 120 km height. As an institute of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) we answer questions associated with atmospheric processes and with relevance to the research programmes "Aeronautics, Space, and Transportation" and "Energy" of the Helmholtz Association (HGF). With these competences the institute works both on fundamental and application-oriented problems, where long-term basic research in the forerun of applications is emphasized. The institute offers its competence to the society and the politics in relation to all problems of atmospheric relevance. The department “Earth System Modelling” investigates the movement and chemical composition of atmospheric air and the associated energy and mass fluxes with the help of numerical simulation and appropriate observation data.

Be in charge of the development of an Open-Access model for the assessment of new aircraft designs, alternative fueIs, and flight altitudes. This model will comprise the complete chain of physical and chemical processes for the impact of aviation CO2-emissions, NOx-emissions, contrails and aerosols as response surfaces. Be part of an interdisciplinary team where dedicated women and men combine their expertise in environmental and aeronautical science in an international cooperation and find out how to design future aviation climate-neutral. Communicate to and discuss the results with the project team, industry and on international conferences.

In order to achieve these goals, your work will be based on analyses of Earth-System Model data that are compiled in the project team and that you will use to establish response surfaces.

Hence, your work within the Earth-System-Modelling Group will include to:

  • Integration and partial development of response functions
    • Integration of existing CO2-, temperature and sea level response models
    • Support the configuration of high-resolution simulations to derive response models for atmospheric chemistry and micro-physics
    • Development of response models based on these modelling data
    • Integration of the response models into the modelling infrastructure
    • Testing of the model components and documentation
  • Coordination of the project for the development of the software package OpenAirClim
    • Planning the development of individual model parts
    • Communication within the team und reviewing the progress of the project
  • Development of a model infrastructure, which enables an easy and transparent application for interdisciplinary users
    • Planning and testing of the model infrastructure

Your qualifications:

  • university degree natural science, engineering, mathematics or similar.
  • profound experience in computing (Unix, Python)
  • very good English language skills, both written and spoken; German language skills are advantageous
  • very good communication skills
  • experience in project work
  • good skills in Word and PowerPoint
  • proficiency in meteorology is desirable
  • experience in working in international teams is a plus
